Insulation Resistance Measurement
Warning: This procedure requires trained personnel with PPE!
The machine must be in a cold state and disconnected from the power supply.
The insulation resistance must be measured in a safe environment.
Is the machine in a cold state and disconnected from the power supply?
Is the environment safe for insulation resistance measurement?
It is recommended to insulate and test each phase separately.
Is each phase insulated and tested separately?
During the test of one phase, the other phases must be grounded.
Are the other phases grounded during the test of one phase?
Stator Winding Insulation Drying
Warning: This procedure requires trained personnel with PPE!
Motor dismantled completely
End shields, rotor with shaft, fan cover, fan and terminal box removed
Wound stator with frame transferred to oven for drying process
Enter the oven temperature
Wound stator placed in oven for two hours
Stator allowed to cool to room temperature after drying process
Enter the measured insulation resistance
Stator drying process repeated if required insulation resistance not met
Motor Inspection
Visual inspection of the motor and coupling
Check for abnormal noises, vibrations, excessive heating, wear signs, misalignment or damaged parts
Replacement of damaged parts as required
Measurement of the insulation resistance
Cleaning of the motor enclosure
Removal of oil spills and dust accumulation from the motor frame surface
Cleaning of motors with potential risk for electrostatic charge accumulation
Check cooling fan condition and clean the air inlet & outlet openings
Investigation of the actual condition of the seals and replacement, if required
Motor Maintenance
Warning: All repair services on motors for use in hazardous areas must be performed by qualified personnel and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Motor disconnected from the power supply and is completely stopped?
Motor terminals inside the terminal box free of dangerous voltages?
Motor surface cooled to ambient temperature before opening the terminal box or disassembling the motor?
Record installation conditions such as terminal connection diagram and alignment or leveling conditions
Motor disassembled without scratching machined surfaces or damaging threads?
Motor assembled on a flat surface ensuring a stable support base?
Footless motors fixed or locked on the base to prevent accidents?
Motor handled carefully to avoid damaging insulated components such as windings, insulated rolling bearings and power cables?
Motor Lubrication
Warning: Proper lubrication plays a vital role in motor performance. Only use the grease or oil types, amounts and lubrication intervals recommended for the bearings.
Type of lubricant used (oil or grease)
When the motor is fitted with thermal protection devices for bearing temperature control, consider the operating temperature limits.
The grease and oil disposal should be made in compliance with applicable laws in each country.
Excess grease causes bearing overheating, resulting in bearing failure.
For each increment of 15 °C above the room temperature, the relubrication intervals given in the Table must be halved.
For special applications such as high and low temperatures, aggressive environments, or driven by frequency inverter (VFD), contact WEG about the required amount of grease and relubrication intervals.
Motor disassembly must be carried out as specified in Item 8.3.
If motors are fitted with shielded or sealed bearings (ZZ, DDU, 2RS, VV), these bearings must be replaced at the end of the grease service life.
