Battery Check

Check mark

CAUTION: BATTERY PRECAUTIONS

Check mark

The battery produces flammable and explosive hydrogen gas. Do not cause a spark from the battery with tools. Do not smoke or light a match near the battery.

Check mark

The electrolyte contains poisonous and corrosive sulfuric acid. Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothes. Never ingest electrolyte. Wear protective safety glasses when working near the battery. Keep children away from the battery.

Check mark

EMERGENCY MEASURES: If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush your eyes with clean water immediately and get immediate medical attention. If possible, continue to apply water with a sponge or cloth while en route to the medical office.

Check mark

Check the battery for corroded or loose terminal connections, cracks, or loose hold-down clamp.

Check mark

If the battery is corroded, wash it off with a solution of warm water and baking soda. Coat the outside of the terminals with grease to prevent further corrosion.

Check mark

If the terminal connections are loose, tighten their clamp nuts-but do not overtighten.

Check mark

Tighten the hold-down clamp only enough to keep the battery firmly in place. Overtightening may damage the battery case.

Check mark

NOTICE: Be sure the engine and all accessories are off before performing maintenance.

Checking battery fluid

Check mark

CHECKING BY FLUID LEVEL LINES

Check mark

The fluid (electrolyte) level must be between the upper and lower lines.

Check mark

When checking the fluid level, look at all six cells, not just one or two.

Check mark

If the level is lower than the lower line, add distilled water. (See "ADDING DISTILLED WATER".)

Check mark

ADDING DISTILLED WATER

Check mark

1. Remove the vent plugs.

Check mark

2. Add distilled water to cells needing fluid.

Check mark

If the side of your battery is covered, check the water level by looking down directly above the cell as illustrated above.

Check mark

Vent plugs removed

Check mark

Is the battery installed on the vehicle?

Check mark

If battery is installed on the vehicle, disconnect the ground cable.

Check mark

Power switch on the recharger is off when connecting the charger cables to the battery and when disconnecting them.

Check mark

Battery is being charged in an unconfined area

Check mark

Never recharge the battery while the engine is running. Also, be sure all accessories are turned off.

Elgine Coolant Level Check

Check mark

Warning: Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot.

Check mark

Is the engine cold?

Check mark

Enter the coolant level in the reservoir

Check mark

Is the coolant level between the 'FULL' and 'LOW' lines?

Check mark

If the level is low, add ethylene-glycol type coolant.

Check mark

Did the coolant level reach the 'FULL' line after adding coolant?

Check mark

If the coolant level drops within a short time, there may be a leak in the system.

Check mark

Any visible leaks in the radiator, hoses, radiator cap, drain cock, or water pump?

Check mark

If no leak is found, have your Toyota dealer test the cap pressure and check for leaks in the cooling system.
