Battery Maintenance

Check the level of electrolyte
Is the electrolyte level within the recommended range?
Add distilled water if necessary

Battery Cleaning
Keep cables, terminals, and external surfaces clean
Wash cables, terminals, and external surfaces with baking soda and water solution
Rinse thoroughly with clear water
500 Hourly / 1 Yearly Starter Drive Maintenance
Style "A" Drive Service
Remove the starter from the engine and remove the dust cover.
Hold the drive pinion in a vice with soft jaws when removing and installing the stop nut.
Ensure the vise is not overtightened to avoid distorting the drive pinion.
Remove the stop nut, stop gear spacers, anti-drift spring, dust cover spacer, and drive pinion.
Clean the splines on drive shaft thoroughly with solvent and dry them.
Apply Kohler electric starter drive lubricant to the splines.
Apply Loctite® No. 271 to the stop nut threads.
Install the drive pinion, dust cover spacer, anti-drift spring, stop gear spacer, and stop nut.
200 Hourly Spark Plug Maintenance
Preparation
Clean the area around the base of the spark plug
Blow out the cavity with compressed air
Spark Plug Removal and Inspection
Remove the spark plug
Check the condition of the spark plug
Is the spark plug worn or questionable for reuse?
Spark Plug Replacement
Replace the spark plug if necessary
100 Hourly Cooling Shrouds and Cooling Areas Cleaning
Disassembly
Remove the blower housing
Remove other cooling shrouds
Cleaning
Clean the cooling fins
Clean the external surfaces as necessary
Reassembly
Reinstall the blower housing
Reinstall the cooling shrouds
200 Hourly Oil Filter Replacemenet
Oil Drainage
Drain the oil from the engine crankcase.
Remove the oil filter drain plug (where applicable) located at the base of the oil filter adapter and allow the oil filter to drain.
Old Filter Removal and Preparation
Remove the old filter and wipe off the filter adapter.
Torque the oil filter drain plug to 7.3-9.0 N·m (65-80 in. lb.).
New Filter Preparation
Place a new replacement filter in a shallow pan with the open end up.
Pour new oil into the filter until it reaches the bottom of the threads.
