John Deere Tractor 5425

Change primary and secondary air filter elements.

Check unloader valve condition.

Change transmission/hydraulic oil and Filter.

1. Lower rockshaft to remove trapped oil.

2. Remove drain plug from transmission case (A) and drain out oil.

3. If equipped with MFWD axle, also remove drain plug (B) in drop housing.

4. Replace filter (C) while changing oil. Apply a film of oil to new filter gasket and install new filter. Hand tighten only.

5. Refill system with transmission-hydraulic oil. (See Fuels, Lubricants and Coolant section).

6. Wait 5 minutes and check oil level at dipstick (D).

Replace Primary and Secondary Air Filter Elements

Open hood and remove right-side grill panel

Remove air cleaner retaining strap (A)

Release three air cleaner cover retaining clips (B) and remove air cleaner cover (C)

Remove primary (D) and secondary (E) elements

Before you install primary element, clean the inside of air cleaner housing and unloader valve with a damp cloth

Transmission/hydraulic filter replaced?

Sign off on the 100 hourly maintenance

Is the level in coolant tank (B) above 'LOW'?

Is the oil level between two marks on dipstick (A)?

Fill fuel tank and add diesel conditioner

Is the fuel tank filled and diesel conditioner added?

Drain water and sediment from fuel tank

Is the water and sediment drained from fuel tank?

Flush Cooling System and Replace Thermostat

1. Drain coolant - Remove radiator cap (A). Open drain valve (B) on radiator and drain coolant from radiator. Drain coolant from engine block:

• Open drain plug (C) on left-hand side of engine block.

2. Remove thermostat - Remove thermostat cover, remove thermostat, and reinstall cover (without thermostat). Tighten cap screws to 47 N.m (35 lb-ft).

3. Flush system with water - Close all drain valves/plugs and fill system with clean water. Run engine about 10 minutes to stir up possible rust or sediment. Stop engine and drain water from system before rust and sediment settle.

4. Flush system with Radiator Cleaner - Close all drain valve/plugs, reinstall coolant start aid switch, and fill the cooling system with a good commercial radiator cleaner and water. Follow instructions provided with cleaner. Stop engine and immediately drain system.

5. Flush system with water. - Close all drain valve/plugs, reinstall coolant start aid switch, and fill with clean water to flush the system. Run the engine about 10 minutes, then drain out flushing water.

6. Replace thermostat - Remove thermostat cover (A) and clean off the gasket material. Apply gasket sealant to new gasket and install along with new thermostat. Tighten cap screws to 47 N.m (35 lb-ft).

7. Fill with fresh coolant - Close all drain valve/plugs and fill with a mixture of antifreeze, and coolant conditioner as specified in the ""Fuels, Lubricants and Coolant"" section.
