1. Park tractor on a level surface.

2. STOP engine.

Check mark

3. Check engine oil when oil is cold.

4. Lift hood.

5. Clean around dipstick.

Check mark

6. Remove dipstick (A): 240, 260 and 265 Tractors.

● Remove dipstick (B): 285 Tractor.

7. Install dipstick in tube, but DO NOT tighten. Let dipstick threads rest on top of tube.

250 Hourly Maintenance

Change hydrostatic transmission and oil filter

Engine stopped and park brake engaged

Key removed

Drain plug removed to drain oil

Transmission filter removed using a filter wrench

Film of clean transmission oil applied on seal of new filter

Filter filled 1/3 to 1/2 full with John Deere All-Weather Hydrostatic Fluid or equivalent type “F” Automatic Transmission Fluid

Filter tightened until it contacts mounting surface and then by hand an additional 1/2 turn

Drain plug installed and tightened

Lubricate front wheel spindles

Change engine oil

Run engine to warm oil

Park tractor on level surface

STOP engine. Remove key

Remove drain plug (A) to drain oil

Check mark

Put a small funnel under filter to collect oil when filter is removed to prevent oil spill

Remove oil filter (B). Turn filter counterclockwise to remove

Apply film of clean engine oil on seal of new filter

● Check tire pressure.

● Check and clean precleaner and air cleaner.

2. To remove air intake screen: 285 Tractor. (See Cleaning Air Intake Screen in this section.)

• Remove two thumbs screws (A).

• Remove air cleaner (C).

— To remove cover (B): 285 Tractor:

● Change engine oil and filter.

● Check spark plug(s).

Check mark

1. Lift hood.

Check mark

2. Disconnect spark plug wire (A): 240, 260, and 265 Tractor engine (B).

• Disconnect spark plug wire (A): 285 Tractor engine (C).

Check mark

3. Remove spark plug.

Check mark

4. Clean spark plug carefully with wire brush.

5. Inspect spark plug for:
