Warning: This procedure requires trained personnel with PPE!

Check mark

Fuse, circuit breaker, ground fault protective device tripped?

Check mark

If the protective device has tripped, report the issue and stop the procedure

Check mark

Circuit protective device rating matches equipment nameplate?

Check mark

If the rating does not match, report the issue and stop the procedure

Check mark

Power to unit disconnected?

Check mark

All power legs open?

Check mark

Protective terminal cover intact?

Psc Fan Motor Relay Contact Check

Check mark

WARNING: HIGH VOLTAGE! Disconnect ALL power before servicing or installing. Multiple power sources may be present. Failure to do so may cause property damage, personal injury or death.

Check mark

Motor leads disconnected from 6-circuit fan motor wire harness

Check mark

Connect a voltmeter between circuit 6 and circuits 3 (low speed) or 1 (high speed). NOTE: Circuit 6 is connected directly to 24VAC.

Check mark

System energized at low or high stage

Check mark

WARNING: Line Voltage now present.

Check mark

Measured voltage between circuit 6 and circuits 3 or 1

Check mark

Relay contacts are closed (0VAC)

Check mark

A voltage measurement of approximately 24VAC indicates the relay is open. Replace the control if the relay checks open when it should be closed. See following notes and cautions.

Check mark

NOTE: Ensure any ON delays have expired before making voltage measurements

Run this procedureArrow right

Heater Element Check

Check mark

WARNING: HIGH VOLTAGE! Disconnect ALL power before servicing or installing. Multiple power sources may be present. Failure to do so may cause property damage, personal injury or death.

Check mark

Heater quantity matches the spec sheet

Check mark

Disassemble and remove the heating element(s)

Check mark

Visual inspection of the heater assembly for any breaks in the wire or broken insulators

Check mark

Using an ohmmeter, test the element for continuity - no reading indicates the element is open

Check mark

Replace element if necessary

Check mark

Sign off on the heater element check

Run this procedureArrow right

High Pressure Control Check

Check mark

WARNING: HIGH VOLTAGE! Disconnect ALL power before servicing or installing. Multiple power sources may be present. Failure to do so may cause property damage, personal injury or death.

Check mark

High pressure control capillary senses the pressure in the compressor discharge line

Check mark

Enter the reading from the ohmmeter across terminals of high pressure control

Check mark

WARNING: Line Voltage now present.

Check mark

System started successfully

Check mark

Cardboard placed in front of the condenser coil

Check mark

Enter the pressure at which the high pressure control cuts-out

Check mark

High pressure control operating normally

Check mark

Does the control need to be replaced?

Run this procedureArrow right

Capacitor Check

Check mark

CAPACITOR, RUN

Check mark

A run capacitor is wired across the auxiliary and main windings of a single phase permanent split capacitor motor. The capacitors primary function is to reduce the line current while greatly improving the torque characteristics of a motor.

Check mark

This is accomplished by using the 90° phase relationship between the capacitor current and voltage in conjunction with the motor windings, so that the motor will give two phase operation when connected to a single phase circuit. The capacitor also reduces the line current to the motor by improving the power factor.

Check mark

The line side of this capacitor is marked with "COM" and is wired to the line side of the circuit.

CAPACITOR, START

SCROLL COMPRESSOR MODELS

Check mark

In most cases hard start components are not required on Scroll compressor equipped units due to a non-replaceable check valve located in the discharge line of the compressor.

Check mark

However, in installations that encounter low lock rotor voltage, a hard start kit can improve starting characteristics and reduce light dimming within the home. Only hard start kits approved by Amana® brand or Copeland should be used. "Kick Start" and/or "Super Boost" kits are not approved start assist devices.

Check mark

The discharge check valve closes off high side pressure to the compressor after shut down allowing equalization through the scroll flanks. Equalization requires only about 1/2 second.
