Check for signs of a depleted anode rod

Does the anode rod show signs of depletion?

Turn OFF electric supply to the water heater

Shut OFF the water supply and open a nearby hot water faucet to depressurize the water tank

Drain the tank according to the Draining and Flushing procedures

Close the drain valve after draining

DANGER! Burn hazard. Keep clear of drain valve discharge outlet.

Ensure the area around the drain valve is clear of obstructions.

Is the drain valve discharge outlet clear of personnel and equipment?

Monitor the water flow until it runs clean.

Close the drain valve after the water runs clean.

Inspect the area for any water leakage.

Ensure adequate drainage is available before inspection.

Verify that the water heater is turned off and cooled down before starting the inspection.

Locate the anode rod on the water heater.

Inspect the anode rod for signs of depletion or corrosion.

Is the anode rod depleted or heavily corroded?

Does the anode rod need replacement?

Turn OFF electrical disconnect switch

Drain the heater following Draining instructions

Remove the banks and gaskets from the openings

Turn OFF the electrical disconnect switch

Close the cold water inlet valve to heater

Open a nearby hot water faucet to vent the system

Is the heater being drained for an extended shutdown?

Leave the drain valve open during extended shutdown
