Capacitors: The intermediate DC circuit of the drive contains several electrolytic capacitors. Operating time, load, and surrounding air temperature have an effect on the life of the capacitors. Capacitor life can be extended by decreasing the surrounding air temperature. Capacitor failure is usually followed by damage to the unit and an input cable fuse failure, or a fault trip. If you think that any capacitors in the drive have failed, contact ABB.

Check capacitor reforming for spare modules and spare capacitors

Reforming the capacitors: The capacitors must be reformed if the drive has not been powered (either in storage or unused) for a year or more. The manufacturing date is on the type designation label.

Enter the manufacturing date of the capacitors

Has the drive been powered in the last year?

Sign off on the capacitor check

Check quality of supply voltage

Inspect dustiness, corrosion or temperature

Inspect IP66 (UL Type 4X) frames R1..R3: Drive cover and gasket assembly

Do these steps before you begin any installation or maintenance work.

Clearly identify the work location and equipment.

Disconnect all possible voltage sources. Make sure that re-connection is not possible. Lock out and tag out.

Protect any other energized parts in the work location against contact.

Take special precautions when close to bare conductors.

Are all components within their mission time?

If any component is beyond its mission time, proceed with the following steps

Choose the type of service done

Sign off on the safety components replacement

Clearly identified the work location and equipment

Disconnected all possible voltage sources and ensured re-connection is not possible

Protected any other energized parts in the work location against contact

Measured that the installation is de-energized using a quality voltage tester

Installed temporary grounding as required by the local regulations

Obtained a permit to work from the person in control of the electrical installation work

Replacing the auxiliary cooling fan, IP55 (UL Type 12) frames R1...R2
