Observe interior and exterior condition for scale build-up

Has the unit been checked for air or vapor binding?

Inspect for severe expansion strains, leaking tube joints, and damage to the heat exchanger

Clean exchangers subject to fouling or scaling periodically

Describe any light sludge or scale coating observed on the tubes

Enter the interval between cleanings in days

Check for presence of renewable anodes or pipe plugs

Inspect anodes for scale or surface coatings

Clean anodes if scale or coatings are present

Verify pipe plug material is softer than the base part

Inspect for shipping damage and contamination

Is the heat exchanger placed in immediate service?

Take precautions to prevent rusting or contamination if not in immediate service

Describe preservation methods for interior surfaces during storage

Remove accumulations and prepare for indoor storage

Is the storage environment ideal?

Record temperature in storage area

Record relative humidity in storage area

Ensure all pressure is off equipment and the unit is drained before opening heads

Inspect all tubes for erosion, corrosion, or foreign material

Inspect all anodes for excessive corrosion or scale insulation

Inspect filters to prevent foreign matter from entering the exchanger

Avoid blowing out heat exchangers with air when operating fluids are flammable or hazardous

Select cleaning method for heat exchangers

Use a torque wrench when replacing heads

Ensure the following conditions are met before shutdown

Drain all fluids to eliminate possibility of freezing and corrosion

Drain condensate from steam heaters and similar apparatus to guard against water hammer

Ensure there is no pulsation of fluids to prevent vibration and strain
