Bearing Temperature Check
Initial Temperature Measurement
Measure and record the bearing temperature using a contact-type thermometer
Temperature Evaluation
Is the bearing temperature within the normal range (up to 160°F or 71°C)?
Is the bearing temperature below the maximum safe operating temperature (180°F or 82°C)?
Lubrication Check
Is the bearing lubricant of the proper viscosity?
Is the lubricant at the correct level?
Potential Causes of Overheating
Seal Removal
Remove Rotating Portion of Seal
Slide the shaft sleeve and rotating portion of the seal off the shaft as a unit
Remove Stationary Element and Seat
Use a pair of stiff wires with hooked ends to remove the stationary element and seat
Remove the hardware (25 and 26) and separate the seal plate (27) and gasket (3) from the bearing housing (5)
Position the seal plate on a flat surface with the impeller side down
Use a wooden dowel or other suitable tool to press on the back side of the stationary seat until the seat, O-rings, and stationary element can be removed
Final Steps
Remove the shaft sleeve O-ring (22)
Pump And Seal Disassembly
Review all SAFETY information in Section A
Follow the instructions on all tags, labels, and decals attached to the pump
Familiarize yourself with this manual
Disconnect or lock out the power source to ensure that the pump will remain inoperative
Allow the pump to completely cool if overheated
Check the temperature before opening any covers, plates, or plugs
Close the suction and discharge valves
Vent the pump slowly and cautiously
Drain the pump
Rotating Assembly Removal
Preparation
Has the power source been removed to provide clearance?
Loosen the impeller while the rotating assembly is still secured to the pump casing.
Seal Cavity Drain Plug Removal
Remove the seal cavity drain plug (18) and drain the seal lubricant.
Clean and reinstall the seal cavity drain plug.
Impeller Immobilization and Removal
Immobilize the impeller by wedging a block of wood between the vanes and the pump casing.
Remove the impeller capscrew and washer (28 and 29).
Bearing Lubrication
Initial Inspection
Check the oil level through the sight gauge (17)
Is the oil level at the middle of the gauge?
Lubrication Process
Is lubrication required?
Add SAE No. 30 non-detergent oil through the air vent (8) if lubrication is required
Ensure the white reflector in the sight gauge is positioned horizontally
