1000 Hourly Hydraulic Excavator Maintenance

Check mark

Battery - Clean

Check mark

Clean the battery surface with a clean cloth. Keep the terminals clean and keep the terminals coated with petroleum jelly. Install the post cover after you coat the terminal post with petroleum jelly.

Check mark

Battery Hold-Down - Tighten

Check mark

Tighten the hold-downs for the battery in order to prevent the batteries from moving during machine operation.

Check mark

Belt - Inspect/Adjust/Replace

Check mark

Note: This engine is equipped with a belt tightener that automatically adjusts the belt to the correct tension.

Check mark

1. Unlatch the engine hood and raise the engine hood.

Check mark

2. Inspect the condition of the serpentine belt. Over time the belt ribs will lose material (C). The space between the ribs will increase (D). The loss of material will cause the pulley sheave to contact the belt valley. This will lead to belt slippage and accelerated wear (E). Replace the belt if the belt is worn or frayed.

Check mark

3. If the belt requires replacement, perform Step 3a through Step 3f.

Check mark

Oil Filter (Hydraulic Hammer) - Replace

Check mark

WARNING: Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin.

Check mark

The use of hydraulic hammers shortens the life of hydraulic oil. If a hydraulic hammer is used, the maintenance interval is shortened.

Check mark

Park the machine on level ground in the service position as shown.

Check mark

Move the hydraulic lockout control to the UNLOCKED position.

Check mark

Turn the engine start switch to the ON position.

Check mark

Move the joysticks and the travel levers/pedals to the full stroke positions to relieve the pressure in the hydraulic lines.

Check mark

Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position and return the lever for the hydraulic lockout control to the LOCKED position.

Check mark

WARNING: Pressurized system! The hydraulic tank contains hot oil under pressure. To prevent burns from the sudden release of hot oil, relieve the tank pressure with the engine off. Relieve pressure by slowly turning the cap until the cap reaches the secondary stop.

12000 Hourly or 6 Yearly Hydraulic Excavator Maintenance

Check mark

WARNING: Engine hood and engine hood parts can be hot while engine is running or immediately after engine shutdown. Hot parts or hot components can cause burns or personal injury. Do not allow these parts to contact your skin, when engine is running or immediately after engine shutdown. Use protective clothing or protective equipment to protect your skin.

Check mark

WARNING: Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali. At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.

Check mark

NOTICE: Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the cooling system information in Special Publication, SEBU6250, “Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations”. Failure to do so could result in damage to the cooling system components.

Check mark

NOTICE: Mixing ELC with other products will reduce the effectiveness of the coolant. This could result in damage to cooling system components.

Check mark

Unlatch the engine hood and raise the engine hood.

Check mark

Slowly loosen the pressure cap that is on the coolant reservoir to release pressure from the cooling system.

Check mark

Remove the pressure cap.

Check mark

Inspect the gasket on the pressure cap. If the gasket is damaged, replace the pressure cap.

Check mark

Open the rear access door on the left side of the machine.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid Filter - Replace

Check mark

Open the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) compartment.

Check mark

Ensure that the area around the DEF filter is clean and free from dirt. The DEF filter threaded cap and the filter element are a combined assembly.

Check mark

Remove the protective cover (1) from DEF pump housing (2).

Check mark

Remove the DEF filter assembly (3) and discard.

Check mark

Install a new DEF filter assembly into the DEF pump housing.

Check mark

Tighten the filter assembly to 10 N·m (88.5 lb in). Install the protective cover.
