Heat Exchanger Maintenance
Maintenance
Ensure all pressure is off equipment and the unit is drained before opening heads.
Remove the bonnets.
Inspect all tubes for erosion, corrosion, or foreign material.
Inspect all anodes for excessive corrosion or scale insulation and scrape to a bright surface.
Inspect filters to prevent foreign matter from entering the exchanger.
Avoid blowing out heat exchangers with air when operating fluids are flammable or hazardous.
Select cleaning method for heat exchangers
Use a torque wrench when replacing heads and tighten bolts to specified torque values.
Heat Exchanger Storage Maintenance
Storage
Inspect for shipping damage and contamination
Is the heat exchanger placed in immediate service?
Take precautions to prevent rusting or contamination if not in immediate service
Describe preservation methods for interior surfaces during storage
Remove accumulations of dirt, water, ice or snow and wipe dry before indoor storage
Was the unit filled with oil or other preservative?
Open drain plugs to remove accumulated moisture, then reseal if not filled with preservative
Store under cover in a heated area, if possible
Initial Heat Exchanger Startup Check
Operation
Open the vent connections and start to circulate the cold medium only.
Are the passages in the exchanger entirely filled with the cold fluid before closing the vents?
Introduce the hot medium gradually until all passages are filled with liquid, then close vents.
Slowly bring the unit up to temperature.
Was the operation started gradually?
Ensure no hot fluid is admitted to the unit suddenly when empty or cold.
Ensure the unit is not shocked with cold fluid when hot.
Heat Exchanger Scale Inspection
Maintenance
Observe interior and exterior condition for scale build-up
Is there any noticeable scale build-up on the tubes?
Check for complete stoppage of flow through tubes due to scale
Has there been a marked increase in pressure drop?
Has there been a reduction in performance?
Has the unit been checked for air or vapor binding?
Clean the tubes if fouling or scaling is observed
Describe any observed damage to the heat exchanger due to scale build-up
Heat Exchanger Anode Inspection
Maintenance — Anodes
Verify the presence of components
Inspect anodes for scale or surface coatings
Are pipe plugs used instead of anodes?
Check pipe plug material
