1 Yearly Burner Check

Check mark

- A visual check of the pilot and main burner flames should be made at least once each year, preferably at the beginning of the heating season. Checking and Adjusting:

ADJUST PILOT BURNER:

Check mark

Pilot flame should surround 3/8" to 1/2" of the pilot sensor.

Check mark

Refer to Fig. 18. If flame needs adjusting, do it as follows:

1. Remove screw cover over pilot adjusting screw.

Check mark

2. Insert small screwdriver and adjust flame as needed. Turn screw counterclockwise to increase flame, clockwise to decrease.

3. Replace screw cover over pilot adjusting screw.

MAIN BURNER AIR ADJUSTMENT:

The primary air shutters on the cast iron main burners should be adjusted so the flame forms a sharp blue cone with no yellow. It may be necessary to remove the rollout shield to observe main burner flames. Replace after adjustment of air shutters.

1 Yearly Boiler Cleaning

- Flue passages between sections should be examined yearly and cleaned if necessary.

- To clean, remove burners, pilot, and vent pipe.

Check mark

- Remove top and front jacket panels.

Check mark

- Remove the two screws attaching the intermediate front panel to the left and right side jacket panels.

Check mark

- Remove the draft diverter and intermediate front panel as a unit.

Check mark

- Carefully remove the cerafelt gasket strips.

Check mark

- Clean passageways between sections with a flexible handle wire brush.

Check mark

- Remove dirt from bottom of boiler and from between sections by vacuuming.

- Make sure all flame ports in burners are open and clear.

1 Monthly Relief Valve Test

Warning: This procedure should be performed by a trained technician.

Is the system pressure below the relief valve pressure rating?

Check mark

If the system pressure is not below the relief valve pressure rating, shut down your system and drain it until the pressure is reduced.

Check mark

Did the relief valve open automatically when the system pressure exceeded its pressure rating?

Check mark

If the relief valve did not open automatically, contact an authorized contractor or qualified service technician.

Is the discharge pipe properly connected to the valve outlet and arranged to safely dispose of boiler discharge?

Enter the normal system operating pressure.

Did you hold the trip lever fully open for at least five seconds to flush any sediment?

Did you allow the valve to snap shut?

1 Yearly Boiler Flue Passages Maintenance

Under normal operating conditions, with the burners properly adjusted, it should not be necessary to clean the boiler flue gas passages.

However, to assure trouble-free operation, we recommend that you have the flue passages, burner adjustment, and operation of the controls checked once each year by a competent Service Technician.

Before the start of each season (or whenever system has been shut down for some time recheck the whole system for leaks ... and recheck the boiler and vent pipe for leaks.
