Ensure shut-off valve is in return line to isolate trap from return header

Observation During Test Valve Open

Select the observation when test valve is open

Refer to the relevant page for troubleshooting based on observation

Was the steam trap functioning correctly?

Ensure the by-pass valve is closed

Is the by-pass valve steam tight?

Can the trap operate without the by-pass valve?

Remove the by-pass valve if it is not necessary for operation

Avoid opening the by-pass valve unnecessarily

Ensure the by-pass valve remains closed after inspection

Hold the lever assembly against the valve seat with the valve contacting its seat

Ensure the two fulcrum points are resting on the face of the seat

Are the guide pins central in the guide pin holes?

Is there equal side-to-side movement of the lever?

Bend the pins until they are centrally located

Ensure pins remain perpendicular to the guide pin plate

Verify the lever can drop until it rests on the guide pin hooks

Remove all sediment and dirt from the trap body

Immerse mechanism in approved cleaning fluid if required

Backflushing Stainless Steel Traps

Backflush with compressed air or water under pressure

Strainer Installation and Maintenance

Install a strainer ahead of the trap if there is an exceptional amount of dirt

Determine strainer maintenance frequency

Ensure the steam trap is isolated from the system

Gather necessary tools and replacement parts

Remove the old lever and guide pin assembly

Install the new lever and guide pin assembly

Check if the new assembly is properly aligned and secured
