Ignition System Safety Shutoff Test

Close the pilot adjusting valve on the left side of the manifold

Did the main burners and pilot extinguish within four seconds?

Did the spark igniter on the pilot assembly begin sparking?

If System Does Not Operate Correctly

Discontinue gas supply by closing main manual shutoff

Call a qualified serviceman to correct the situation and describe the issue

Attach a pressure gauge or a manometer to the gauge port and check for correct manifold pressure.

Is the manifold pressure within the acceptable range?

Enter the time in seconds to burn one cubic foot of gas (T).

Enter the gas heating value in Btu per cubic foot of gas (H).

Calculate the actual boiler input per hour (Btuh) using the formula (3600/T)xH.

Is the gas pressure at the burner manifold within the limit stated on the boiler rating plate?

Ensure all appliances remain connected to the common existing system are in operation

Seal any unused openings in the common venting system

Visually inspect the venting system for proper size and horizontal pitch

Check for blockage, restriction, leakage, corrosion, and other deficiencies

Close all building doors and windows

Close all doors between the appliance space and other spaces

Main Burner Flame Characteristics

Check for complete combustion of gas

Ensure rapid ignition and carryover of flame across entire burner

Verify reasonably quiet operation during initial ignition, operation, and extinction

Check for no excessive lifting of flame from burner ports

Is there any accumulation of lint or foreign material restricting air openings?

Clear any lint or foreign material from air openings if present

Ensure drain line is installed to direct discharge to a safe location

Is the manual gas control valve turned off?

Lift the lever at the top of the valve several times

Does the valve seat properly and operate freely?

Post-Inspection Safety Measures

Check for any signs of overheating

Is the gas supply functioning correctly?
