6 Monthly Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve

Check mark

DANGER! Burn hazard. Hot water discharge. Keep clear of Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve discharge outlet.

Check mark

It is recommended that the Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve should be checked to ensure that it is in operating condition every 6 months.

Check mark

When checking the Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve operation, make sure that (1) no one is in front of or around outlet of Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve discharge line, and (2) that water discharge will not cause any property damage, as water may be extremely hot. Use care when operating valve as valve may be hot.

Check mark

Check if the pressure relief valve seats properly and operates freely

Check mark

If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely reset and continues to release water, immediately close the cold water inlet to the water heater and drain the water heater.

Check mark

Replace the Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve with a properly rated/sized new one, if it fails to reset.

Check mark

If the Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve on water heater weeps or discharges periodically, this may be due to thermal expansion.

Check mark

NOTE: Excessive water pressure is the most common cause of Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve leakage. Excessive water system pressure is most often caused by 'thermal expansion' in a 'closed system.' The Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve is not intended for the constant relief of thermal expansion.

Check mark

Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve leakage due to pressure build up in a closed system that does not have a thermal expansion tank installed is not covered under the limited warranty. Thermal expansion tanks must be installed on all closed water systems.

6 Monthly Venting System and Barometric Draft Control Maintenance

Check mark

Note: The heater is equipped with a double acting barometric draft control. This control assembly is factory adjusted to automatically regulate the chimney draft imposed on the unit.

Check mark

Does the damper gate pivot freely in the ring guides?

Check mark

Examine the venting system every six months for obstructions and/or deterioration of the vent piping.

Check mark

Any obstructions or deterioration in the vent piping?

Check mark

Remove all soot or other obstructions from chimney which will retard free draft.

Check mark

Was the chimney cleaned from soot or other obstructions?

Check mark

Sign off on the venting system and barometric draft control maintenance

1 Yearly Anode Rod Inspection

Check mark

CAUTION! Property Damage Hazard

Check mark

Avoid water heater damage.

Check mark

Inspection and replacement of anode rod required.

Check mark

The anode rod is used to protect the tank from corrosion.

Check mark

Anode rod deterioration depends on water conductivity, not necessarily water condition.

Check mark

Inspection should be conducted by a qualified technician, and at a minimum should be checked annually after warranty period.

Check mark

Artificially softened water is exceedingly corrosive because the process substitutes sodium ions for magnesium and calcium ions.

Check mark

The anode rod should be inspected after a maximum of three years and annually thereafter until condition of anode rod dictates its replacement.

Check mark

Anode rod intact?

Run this procedureArrow right

1 Monthly Tank Cleanout Procedure

Check mark

Flush the heater by opening the drain valve and allowing two gallons of water to drain. Keep the inlet water valve open to maintain pressure in the tank.

Check mark

Shut off the gas and drain the heater before opening the cleanout.

Check mark

Drain the heater.

Check mark

Remove the outer cover plate from the lower side of the heater jacket.

Check mark

Remove the six hex head screws securing the tank cleanout plate and remove the plate.

Check mark

Remove lime, scale, or sediment, taking care not to damage the glass lining.

Check mark

Inspect the cleanout plate gasket. If a new gasket is required, refer to the replacement parts list for the item number.

Check mark

Install the cleanout plate. Ensure the plate is drawn up tight by tightening the screws securely.

Check mark

Replace the outer jacket cover plate.

Run this procedureArrow right

6 Monthly Water Heater Storage Tank Draining

Check mark

Turn off the electrical supply to the water heater

Check mark

Turn off the gas supply at the Main Gas Shutoff Valve if the water heater is going to be shut down for an extended period

Check mark

Ensure the cold water inlet valve is open

Check mark

Open a nearby hot water faucet and let the water run until the water is no longer hot

Check mark

Close the cold water inlet valve to the water heater

Check mark

Connect a hose to the water heater drain valve and terminate it to an adequate drain

Check mark

Open the water heater drain valve and allow all the water to drain from the storage tank

Check mark

Close the water heater drain valve when all water in the storage tank has drained

Check mark

Close the hot water faucet opened in Step 4
