100 Hourly Tractor Maintenance
1. CHANGE ENGINE OIL. Remove crankcase drain plug and filter drain plug. Replace plugs after oil drains out. Use oil specified on page 78.
2. CHECK ALL TIRES. Repair cuts or breaks as soon as possible. Check pressure of each tire and adjust if needed. If tires contain liquid ballast, use a special air-water gauge, and measure with valve stem at bottom. See tire pressure chart on page 101.
200 Hourly Maintenance:
1. INSPECT FIRE EXTINGUISHER (if equipped). See manual packaged with extinguisher for inspection instructions.
2. REPLACE TRANSMISSION FILTER ELEMENT on QUAD-RANGE tractor. With engine stopped, remove filter cover. Pull out old element and install a new one. Replace cover gasket if defective.
3. CHECK TRANSMISSION-HYDRAULIC SYSTEM OIL LEVEL with tractor on level ground. If low, add oil specified on page 79.
4. WASH BREATHER FILTER INSIDE FILLER CAP in solvent, then blow dry with compressed air.
5. SERVICE BATTERIES. Wipe with a damp cloth. Clean and tighten connections if needed. Check liquid level in each cell. Fill to bottom of filler neck with clean, mineral-free water.
6. CHECK TENSION OF ALTERNATOR AND COMPRESSOR BELTS as instructed on page 98.
1200 Hourly Tractor Maintenance
Have your John Deere dealer clean filter in main hydraulic pump.
Disassemble front wheel bearings (except power front-wheel drive) and clean parts in a safe solvent. Pack bearings with wheel bearing grease. Reassemble and tighten nut until slight drag is felt when wheel is turned. Back nut off to insert cotter pin in first hole.
Remove drain plug from transmission case and drain out oil. On QUAD-RANGE tractors, also remove plug from clutch housing. Replace plugs. Before filling system with oil, clean suction screen.
Remove hydraulic pump suction screen after draining out oil. Wash screen carefully in solvent, blow dry with compressed air, and reinstall. Refill system with transmission-hydraulic oil. Capacity is about 16.5 U.S. gal. (62.5 L) for a Power Shift tractor and 22.5 U.S. gal. (85.2 L) for a Quad-Range tractor. During filling, check the dipstick and bring the oil level up slowly to the "FULL" mark. Recheck oil level after operating tractor 5 minutes.
Also drain wheel housings, on tractors with power front-wheel drive. Rotate wheels so drain plugs are at top, and all 2 qts. (2 L) to each wheel housing. Add 2 extra gal. (8 L) to system. Operate power front-wheel drive 15 minutes, then recheck level.
