First clean the load chain with a non-acid or non-caustic type solvent. Then slack the chain and make a link-by-link inspection for nicks, gouges, twisted links and excessive wear or stretching. Chain should be gaged throughout its entire length and replaced if worn beyond serviceable limits.

To determine if load chain should be continued in service, check gage lengths as indicated in Figure 15. Chain worn beyond length indicated, nicked, gouged or twisted should be replaced before returning hoist to service. Chain should be clean, free of twists and pulled taut before measuring.

Note that worn chain can be an indication of worn hoist components. For this reason, the hoist’s chain guides, hook blocks and liftwheel should be examined for wear and replaced as necessary when replacing worn chain. Also, these chains are specially heat treated and hardened and should never be repaired.

!WARNING: Using other than CM supplied load chain may cause the chain to jam in the hoist and/or allow the chain to break and the load to drop.

TO AVOID INJURY: Due to size requirements and physical properties, use only CM HoistAloy load chain in the Lodestar Hoists.

IMPORTANT: Do not use replaced chain for other purposes such as lifting or pulling. Load chain may break suddenly without visual deformation. For this reason, cut worn chain into short lengths to prevent use after disposal.

Check for external evidence of issues

Inspect brake for evidence of slippage

Test control functions for proper operation

Inspect load chain for proper reeving and twists

Check chain guides for wear or burring

Inspect loose end link, loose end screw and dead end block on double reeved units

Inspect suspension lug or hook for excess free play or rotation

Check for visible damage on the hook

Measure the twist angle of the hook

Is the hook excessively opened or showing seat wear?

Does the latch operate properly with sufficient spring pressure?

Does the latch spring back to the tip when released?

Load Sustaining Parts Inspection

Handle and dispose of lubricants as directed in applicable material safety data sheets and in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

Ensure the ProtectorTM is operating without service and has not been degreased or disassembled.

Use Century Lubricants HB-11, #3 grease for the ProtectorTM.

If gears are removed, wipe excess grease off the outside ProtectorTM surfaces with a soft cloth.

Degrease the remaining gears and housings if gears are removed.

Add 7 oz. of Century Lubricants HB-11, #3 grease to gears and housing upon reassembly.

Coat the spline on the end of the drive shaft with a molydisulphide lubricant such as 'Super Herculon'.

Ensure the area is clean and free from obstructions

Gather necessary materials: Lubriplate Bar and Chain Oil 10-R or equivalent

Inspect the load chain for dirt and debris

Clean the load chain if necessary

Apply Lubriplate Bar and Chain Oil 10-R to the load chain

Ensure natural run-off and full coverage of the lubricant
