Preparation and Safety Precautions

Ensure the extinguisher is in the upright position and located in a suitable area for maintenance.

Verify that the extinguisher has been blown down and all pressure is relieved from the agent cylinder and hose assembly.

Install a safety shipping cap on nitrogen cylinders if removed for storage or transportation.

Examine the overall condition of the extinguisher for mechanical damage, corrosion, or missing parts.

Check the extinguisher’s nameplate for legibility and secure fastening.

Enter the agent cylinder’s date of manufacture to determine if a 12-year hydrostatic retest is necessary.

Enter the nitrogen cylinder’s date of manufacture to determine if a 5 or 10-year hydrostatic retest is necessary.

Inspect for mechanical injury, damage, or corrosion

Is there evidence of corrosion penetrating into the pressure vessel?

Is there evidence of mechanical injury or damage?

Remove agent cylinder safety relief, siphon tube, and gas tube

Ensure extinguisher fill cap is used and remains on the cylinder during testing

Record hydrostatic retest pressure for agent cylinders (480 PSI)

Was the cylinder tested by qualified and trained personnel?

Ensure the extinguisher is in its designated place and easily mobilized.

Ensure there are no obstructions preventing visual location or access to the extinguisher.

Ensure the operating instructions on the nameplate are legible and facing outward.

Check that the visual inspection lead wire safety seals are intact.

Examine the unit for missing/loose parts, physical damage, corrosion, or leakage.

Inspect the discharge nozzle for obstructions and ensure the operating handle is in the closed position.

Ensure extinguisher has been blown down and all pressure relieved from agent cylinder and hose assembly.

Verify nitrogen cylinder valve is not accidentally pulled, especially if it is a 'quick-release' type.

Locate the extinguisher in a dry area.

Follow the appropriate model extinguisher maintenance procedures.

Ensure the agent cylinder is properly filled with the correct amount and type of Buckeye Fire Equipment dry chemical agent.
