Heating Element Replacement
Preparation
Unplug the water heater
Drain the water heater

1 Monthly T&P Relief Valve Venting
Preparation
Ensure knowledge of how to shut off the water supply to the heater.
Ensure safety precautions are in place
Venting and Testing Procedure
Lift the handle on the T&P valve to open it, then release to close.
Did the T&P valve open and close properly?
If the valve is stuck and does not open or close, replace it immediately.
Did the T&P valve reseat correctly after venting?
If the valve did not reseat, try re-opening and quickly releasing it to allow it to slap shut.
Water Heater Draining
Unplug the water heater
Open the hot water faucet and let it run until cold water flows
Turn off the cold water supply to the heater
Close the hot water faucet
Disconnect the heater from both the hot and cold water pipes
Carefully detach the water heater from the wall
Tilt the water heater to drain out the remaining water
Check that all tools are collected and stored properly
Inspect the area for any water spillage and clean up
Heating Element Cleaning
Preparation
Remove the heating element. See 11.5, “Removing the heating element”, pg. 8.
Descaling Options
Choose descaling method
Chemical Descaling
Soak the heating element in white vinegar or other descaling solution.
