Unplug and drain the water heater

Disconnect the line wires from the thermostat and the tank

Remove the thermostat from the heating element

Unscrew the heating element using a suitable wrench

Remove the heating element from the tank

Ensure knowledge of how to shut off the water supply to the heater.

Ensure safety precautions are in place

Lift the handle on the T&P valve to open it, then release to close.

Did the T&P valve open and close properly?

Did the T&P valve reseat correctly after venting?

Did the T&P valve remain stuck open or closed?

Install the new heating element

Seal the new heating element properly

Soak the heating element in white vinegar or other descaling solution

Use a nonmetallic (soft) tool to brush the crust off the element

Unscrew the nut and remove the anode rod through the opening of the heating element port
