Disconnect the hotplate from the mains electricity supply

Clean the metal casing using a damp cloth and mild detergent solution

Remove contamination with a damp cloth

Use a domestic cream cleanser for difficult stains

Check the following conditions for heating viscous liquids

Is the stirring action adequate as the viscosity increases?

Are you using glass vessels with thin walls?

Ensure the heat is built up slowly to avoid localised overheating

Ensure the glassware is free from scratches or defects

Place the hotplate in a tray large enough to contain the liquid in case of glassware failure

Wear appropriate safety clothing (gloves, goggles, protective apron)
