Initial Motor Startup Check
Start Up
Disconnect the load when starting the motor, ensuring the key is removed from the shaft.
Check direction of rotation. Is the rotation correct?
If rotation must be changed, describe the steps taken to interchange any two incoming power leads of a three-phase motor.
Is the motor starting quickly and running smoothly when coupled to the load?
If the motor does not start quickly and run smoothly, describe the cause and actions taken.
Enter the motor current after a few minutes of operation.
Is the motor current within the acceptable range based on the nameplate rating and service factor?
When using AC motors with frequency inverters, is the motor's maximum speed rating not exceeded?
30 Daily Storage Winding Insulation Resistance Testing
STORAGE
Measure and record the resistance of the winding insulation every 30 days of storage.
TESTING
Check the insulation resistance of the stator windings with a megohmmeter if the motor has been in storage for a long period or exposed to adverse conditions.
Determine if it is necessary to change out bearings based on storage length and conditions.
Is the resistance lower than 1 megohm?
If resistance is lower than 1 megohm, choose a drying method for the windings.
Monitor the conditions constantly during the drying process.
Ensure the insulation resistance remains constant for a minimum of 30 minutes.
500 Hourly Motor Inspection
Maintenance
Ensure ventilation openings are clear and unobstructed
Check the condition of shaft seals and replace if necessary
Check the condition of connections, mounting, and assembly bolts
Bearing Condition Check
Listen for any unusual noise from the bearings
Record vibration measurement
Record bearing temperature
Inspect spent grease
Initial Motor Mounting Inspection
Mounting
Ensure the underside of the motor feet and/or flange is clean and free of dirt.
Is the motor level?
Remove any masking materials or rust inhibitive coating from the mounting surface and shaft.
Verify ball bearing motor mounting positions as per NEMA MG1-4.03
Is the coupling system elastic with respect to center offset, angular displacement, longitudinal shift, and torsional strain?
Is the motor securely installed to a rigid foundation or mounting surface?
Remove drain plugs from the end shield or frame on totally enclosed motors.
Are the drain plugs mounted at the lowest point of the frame?
