Proper Log-Saw Blade Changing Procedure
A step-by-step guide for the safe and correct replacement of log-saw blades, ensuring all necessary energy isolation, handling, and installation steps are followed to protect personnel and restore optimal cutting performance prior to returning the saw to production.
Proper Log-Saw Blade Changing Procedure
This procedure provides the step-by-step process for safely changing a log-saw blade and restoring the machine to normal operation. Follow the required safety precautions, inspect and clean all related components, install and align the new blade, configure the grinding system, verify blade height and bevel, and complete the required quality checks before releasing the equipment back to production.
Preparation and Safety
Ensure all personal protective equipment is worn
Are hands clean and free of grease or dirt?
Raising and Positioning
Raise the arm to the upper position
Raise the grinding system to the full upper position
Rotate the blade to the middle position using the HMI screen
Blade Cleaning and Removal
Clean the blade with cleaning solvent while wearing protective equipment
Rotate the arm to the center position. Also brining the crane around by hand to center position
Mount plastic blade guard using 4 plastic thumb bolts into the threaded holes supplied on the blade being careful not to cross thread the bolts. The 4 threaded bolts are located under the hub
Take up the slack with the chain
Remove the 3 mount bolts from the side of the blade
Carefully lower and remove the blade, placing it on 5 empty skids
Inspection and Cleaning
Inspect grinding system for worn or bad parts
Check grinding stones for wear and proper positioning. The HMI will find the edge of the blade if properly set. See photos press and hold down for 3 seconds then release ,the sensor will find the edge of the blade
Check main drive belts for wear and cracks
Inspect blade hub for dirt and debris
Rotate hub to check for backlash
Report excessive backlash and damage to Robert Lotman, Maintenance Manager
Clean all surfaces from oil, dirt, paper, and debris
New Blade Installation
Bring new blade on 5 empty skids and transfer blade guard
Keep black edge guide on new blade during installation
Transfer guard to new blade and lower crane
Hook up plastic blade guide and transfer blade to upper position
Guide blade to mounting arm without causing burrs
Install hub in center of guard with 3 socket head cap screws
Check bolts for wear and replace if necessary
Remove guard and return crane and arm to original position
Torque 3 arm bolts to 120 lbs
Close door and rotate arm to upper position, check brake sensor position. Sensor will eluminate when positioned in front of it
System Reset and Grinding Stone Setup
Set inner and outer grinding stone to zero
Lower grinding system using HMI button
Grinding Stone Pressure Setting
Set air pressure on pneumatic panel for inside stone until you can hear the stone making full contact with the blade. You can have high spots on the blade so you need to hear a consistent pitch while sharpening
Adjust outside stone pressure gauge until contact is made ,when you hear a consistent pitch increase the air pressure by 1.5 bar
Monitor and check bevel for at least 1 hour. You must have a 1/4 to 3/8” bevel even on both sides
Set blade height in reference to lower bed section
When height is set rotate the blade 360 degrees checking for clearance
If the bevel is set and the height you may now setup the cuts in the Hmi and test cut a log. Quality must be involved to ensure accurate and clean cuts.
When all checks out mechanically and quality cuts you can turn over to production
