Purpose / Scope: The purpose of this document is to provide the process for performing and reviewing of cyclotron target maintenance. Specifically, to ensure that the targets and associated components have been maintained, documents have been reviewed, and all actions were completed within designated timelines.
Responsible: The site cyclotron engineer, and/ or personnel from the Technical Service Group (TSG), or responsible designee, is responsible for maintaining the cyclotron targets and associated components according to procedure. Site QA/QAS shall be responsible for understanding and verifying that this procedure is in place to assure conformance with the requirements stated herein. QA/QAS is responsible for verifying/reviewing that maintenance was completed. The site Facility Manager is responsible for ensur
Schedule: Every in-use target shall receive periodic maintenance not to exceed every three (3) months, i.e., quarterly. This should be documented on Attachment 3, Cyclotron Targetry Preventive Maintenance Record.

Procedure:
A. Instructions
1. In-use cyclotron targets are to be maintained as needed, not to exceed quarterly (i.e., every 3 months).
2. In the event that the Target Insert does not come clean after multiple cleaning cycles, a soda blasting procedure may be employed.
B. Documentation
1. Use Attachment 3, Cyclotron Targetry Preventive Maintenance Record (or other suitable and validated electronic system) to document PM instances on each target.

Work Instructions
A. GE BTI Target
CAUTION: Target is highly radioactive until Target Window removed. When Target Window is removed, immediately place in a sufficiently shielded location!
2. Disassemble the Target.
NOTE: Do NOT let solvent boil off which will leave a hard residue on the insert.
a. Inspect Target Insert
c. ** Clean Target Insert, SS Nipples, Target Window, and 023 & 007 O-rings with Alcohol heated to ~40°C (100°F) for an appropriate time; minimally, ~10 min*; to remove any residual acetone left on the surface of the insert.
*Suggested but NOT required time. ** If using a single beaker, thoroughly clean the beaker between each step and rinse with next liquid. If using multiple beakers, rinse each beaker with the liquid it will contain.
4. Reassemble Target
5. Install target on Accelerator
NOTE: NEVER connect the target to the cooling system until pressure testing has been completed. There is potential to pressurize the water cooing system with helium if there is a leak.
B. IBA 18/9 BTI Target
CAUTION: Target is highly radioactive until Target Window removed. When Target Window is removed, immediately place is a sufficiently shielded location!!
2. Disassemble Target.
NOTE: Do NOT let solvent boil off which will leave a hard residue on the insert
9. ** Clean Target Insert, SS Nipples, Target Window, and 029 & 006 O-rings in heated Alcohol to ~40°C (100°F) for an appropriate time; minimally, ~10 min* to remove any residual acetone left on the surface of the insert.
*Suggested but NOT required time **If using a single beaker, thoroughly clean the beaker between each step and rinse with next liquid. If using multiple beakers, rinse each beaker with the liquid it will contain.
10. Reassemble Target
C. Cyclotope Target
CAUTION: Target is highly radioactive until Target Window removed. When Target Window is removed, immediately place it in a sufficiently shielded location!!
2. Disassemble Target.
NOTE: Do NOT let solvents boil off which will leave a hard residue in the Target Chamber
a. Inspect Target Chamber
NOTE: Target Window & 022 Buna-N O-ring can be cleaned by just wiping them off using alcohol
*Suggested but NOT required time. ** If using a single beaker, thoroughly clean the beaker between each step and rinse with next liquid. If using multiple beakers, rinse each beaker with the liquid it will contain.
4. Reassemble Target
