Caterpillar D3K, D4K and D5K: Maintenance (Every 2000 Service Hours or 1 Year)

This procedure that is done every 2000 Service Hours focuses on lubricatin the bearing (Spherical Roller). It also gives you the complete lubricating process which you can follow to ensure that your equipment maintains its superior efficiency.

Cooling System Coolant Sample (Level 1) - Obtain

Note: It is not necessary to obtain a Coolant Sample (Level 1) if the cooling system is filled with Cat ELC (Extended Life Coolant).

Note: Obtain a Coolant Sample (Level 1) if the cooling system is filled with any other coolant instead of Cat ELC.

This includes the following types of coolants.

NOTICE: Always use a designated pump for oil sampling, and use a separate designated pump for coolant sampling. Using the same pump for both types of samples may contaminate the samples that are being drawn. This contaminate may cause a false analysis and an incor- rect interpretation that could lead to concerns by both dealers and customers.

Note: Level 1 results may indicate a need for Level 2 Analysis.

Note: Always discard drained fluids according to local regulations.

Obtain the sample of the coolant as close as possible to the recommended sampling interval. In order to receive the full effect of S·O·S analysis, you must establish a consistent trend of data. In order to establish a pertinent history of data, perform consistent samplings that are evenly spaced. Supplies for collecting samples can be obtained from your Caterpillar dealer.

Use the following guidelines for proper sampling of the coolant:

Submit the sample for Level 1 analysis.

    Final Drive Oil - Change

    Hydraulic System Oil - Change

Note: S·O·S oil analysis must be performed at every 500 service hours or 3 months in order to extend the hydraulic oil change interval. The normal hydraulic oil change interval is every 2000 service hours or 1 year. By performing S·O·S oil analysis, the hydraulic oil change interval may be extended to 4000 service hours or 2 years. If S·O·S oil analysis is not available, the hydraulic oil change interval must remain at every 2000 service hours or 1 year.

    ! WARNING

At operating temperature, the hydraulic tank is hot and under pressure.

Hot oil and components can cause personal in- jury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly in order to relieve pressure.

Note: The Hystat transmission and the hydraulic system use a common tank.

NOTICE: Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, test- ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before open- ing any compartment or disassembling any compo- nent containing fluids.
