Metallurgical Viewing Microscope Procedure

This SOP provides instructions for simple usage operations of the Metallurgical Viewing Microscope. The aim is to ensure accurate, consistent, and safe examination of metallurgical samples, enabling the identification of microstructural features, defects, or material characteristics critical for quality control, research, and failure analysis.

    Microscope Operations

    1. To Turn on the lights for of the microscope ensure that the power is plugged in on the back left of the microscope. 2. Flicking the switch into the foremost position turns on the top light. 3. Flicking the switch into the rearmost position turns on the bottom light. 4. Turning this diel changes the amount of light.

    1. Moves sample forward and backward. 2. Moves sample left and right. 3. Moves sample up and down. 4. Changes zoom amount.

    Non-Camera Operations

    1. To change to non-camera operations, ensure that the silver bar is pushed in all the way.

    Camera Operations

    1. To change to camera operations, ensure that the silver bar is pushed out all the way.

    1. Turn the computer on. 2. Ensure that the USB that is circled is plugged in. 3. Double click the 'Sinowon Meta Vision'. 4. The Software should now be open.

    1. To capture an image press the 'Camera' button. 2. To capture an image if the object is already in frame just press the capture button. Ensure that the file name and location are where required. Optional: If the sample needs to be moved/repositioned to capture an the response time will be faster if you lower the resolution. this can be done by, 3. Press the resolution button. 4. Lower the resolution for when the sample needs to be moved, Raise the resolution to capture an image. 5. Press 'Apply' when the desired resolution is selected.

    Note: When taking the measurements you need to ensure that the calibration is set to the correct magnification. 1. To set this calibration press 'CALIBRATION'. 2. At the bottom of the window that pops up at the bottom will be a calibration selector, the ones starting with 'UNITED' are correctly calibrated to the microscope. 3. To take a measurement press 'MEASURMENT'. 4. In the larger of the 2 new windows press 'Browse Image' if the captured image isn't already on screen. 5. The smaller of the 2 windows has the measurement options.

    1. To create a simple report first have a image open and press 'MEASURMENT'. 2. Make the measurements on the image. 3. Press 'Report'. 4. Fill in the necessary the information for the report. 5. Once the necessary information is filled in press 'Generate Report'. 6. Save the report.
