Caterpillar D3K, D4K and D5K: Maintenance (Every 1000 Service Hours or 6 Months)

Tighten the battery retainers on all batteries at every 1000 hour interval.

• Open the battery access cover.

• Clean the top of the batteries with a clean cloth. Keep the terminals clean and coated with petroleum jelly. Install the terminal covers after you coat the terminals.

• Close the battery access cover.

Hydraulic System Oil Filter - Replace

• Two hydraulic filters are located on the left side of the machine. Open the access door on the left side of the machine.

• Remove both filter elements with a strap type wrench.

• Clean the filter element mounting bases. Remove any part of the filter element gasket that remains on the filter element mounting bases.

• Apply a light coat of oil to the gasket of the new filter elements.

• Install the new filter elements by hand.

• Note: Instructions for the installation of the filters are printed on the side of each Caterpillar spin-on filter. For non-Caterpillar filters, refer to the installation instructions that are provided by the supplier of the filter.

• Close the access door on the left side of the machine.

• View the sight gauge through the slot above the rear access door on the back of the machine. Maintain the hydraulic oil level above the “ADD” mark (2) on the sight gauge. Add oil, if necessary.

• Open the right rear access door.

• View the sight gauge inside the right rear access door, if equipped. Maintain the hydraulic oil level above the “ADD” mark (2) on the sight gauge. Add oil, if necessary.

• Inspect the gasket on the cap for damage. Replace the gasket, if necessary.

• Install the cap.

Hydraulic System Oil Filter - Replace

• Two hydraulic filters are located on the left side of the machine. Open the access door on the left side of the machine.

• Remove both filter elements with a strap type wrench.

• Clean the filter element mounting bases. Remove any part of the filter element gasket that remains on the filter element mounting bases.

• Apply a light coat of oil to the gasket of the new filter elements.

• Install the new filter elements by hand.

• Close the access door on the left side of the machine.

• View the sight gauge through the slot above the rear access door on the back of the machine. Maintain the hydraulic oil level above the “ADD” mark (2) on the sight gauge. Add oil, if necessary.

• Open the right rear access door.

• View the sight gauge inside the right rear access door, if equipped. Maintain the hydraulic oil level above the “ADD” mark (2) on the sight gauge. Add oil, if necessary.

• Inspect the gasket on the cap for damage. Replace the gasket, if necessary.

• Install the cap .

Winch Oil Filter - Replace

• Open the access panel on the left side of the machine in order to access the winch oil filter. The winch oil filter is located beside the hydraulic oil filters.

• Use a strap type wrench to remove the oil filter. Clean the filter base and dispose of the used filter properly.

• Apply a thin coat of oil to the seal of the new filter. Install a new winch oil filter by hand.

• Close the access panel.
