Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures should always be used to improve safety in the workplace. The LOTO procedure is a pretty straight forward safety policy that has saved thousands of lives and prevented many more injuries.

    Stage: Preparation of a lockout/tagout program

    Develop and document machinery energy control procedures

    OSHA explains what should be included in the documents as follows:

    Select and train employees authorized to use LOTO procedures

    Stage: LOTO application

    Prepare for the machinery lockout/tagout

    Shut down

    Isolation of energy sources

    Lock and tag placement

    Stored energy release

    Energy isolation verification

    Stage: LOTO removal

    Equipment re-energization

    Procedure update
