A85 Air Adjust Pilot Valve/Troubleshooting

On the E Type Spence valve--remove the bleed port bend copper line first, making sure the bleed port is open and not filled with rust or grit, next make sure the both copper lines are open and not clogged. Make sure your transducer is not failing and sending air to the top of the A 85 Pilot valve and holding it open when its calling it to be closed from the KEMCO cabinet. Once its all inspected, crack open the steam valve and check and see if steam is coming from the side bleed port? if so the main E type spence valve is leaking by. if the side bleed port is not leaking by then look at your A85 side ports from the Brass T. If the steam coming from the Brass T then the A85 pilot valve is stuck open

Clean all components of the A85 Pilot Valve thoroughly

Inspect the following components for wear or damage

• needing 4/500 grit sandpaper and lapping compound

• Sand stem and lap in the seat to disk joint with lapping compound

• install the stem and tighten the stem, adjustment needs to be no more than thickness of a dime, of movement

• before reinstalling on the main spence valve, inspect the bleedport from the side of the main spence valve

• inspect the high temp high pressure Graphite 1/16'' gasket on bottom cap.

Adjustments

After the stem is clean and putting it back together, you need no more than a dimes width of movement from the steam. you can push with your fingers to move the steam to the seat, anything more will cause the pilot valve to stay open and you will over heat the hot water tank.
